Chapter Twelve

Travis and Luna got up to see Skye off the next day, giving her the best start to the morning ever!

Unfortunately, their schedules did not mesh well over the next twenty-four hours. She had to stay an extra few hours after her shift at the hospital to help out with the admission of a new critically ill patient, and was so exhausted when she got home on Tuesday evening, she fell straight into bed.

Travis joined her, snuggling her close—until their blissful sleep was interrupted by a call at four o’clock Wednesday morning from a regular client. They’d had a flood in their kitchen when the intake valve in the dishwasher broke, and they had woken up to the sound of rushing water. They wanted to know if Travis could intervene before any more damage was done.

He said sure and took off, but not before telling Skye where he was headed and promising to meet her at the ob-gyn’s office for their appointment later that afternoon.

As it turned out, she arrived twenty minutes early. He was already in the parking lot, sitting in his truck. Seeing her, he emerged and strode purposefully toward her. The dark wool sweater he wore brought out the whiskey color of his eyes. His tailored slacks did equally nice things for his lower half. She let her gaze drift all the way down to his polished boots before returning to his face. “You look nice.”

“Thanks.” He smiled down at her. “I grabbed some clean clothes before I left this morning. Cade and Allison let me shower at their place.”

Which, Skye knew, was located in the heart of Laramie, a few blocks away.

His siblings were always there for each other; it was part of the Lockhart family credo. “That was nice.”

He returned her smile with an easy one of his own. “It was.” Then his gaze drifted over her cranberry knit dress and matching jacket, lingering on the suede ankle boots made by his sister Emma. He leaned over to give her brow a quick kiss. Letting his hand rest on her waist, he regarded her appreciatively.

Moments later, they fell into step beside each other. She slanted him a look. “Did your client’s crisis get resolved this morning?” she asked curiously.

“Yeah. I’m glad I went, though. The hazmat team wasn’t able to get there until around eight, and a lot more damage would have occurred if we hadn’t been able to work together to mitigate it.”

“I’m sure they were glad to have you come to their rescue.” She sure would have been!

His grin admitted this was so. Together, they continued threading their way through the packed parking lot and toward the building. “I went to the appointments I already had set up for today after that.”

“Busy times,” she murmured. Another wave of the butterflies she’d been experiencing all day engulfed her middle.

He assessed her with a sidelong glance, then wrapped a steadying arm around her shoulders. “You okay?”

She leaned into his strong, reassuring touch, imagining how wonderfully tender and protective he was going to be with their child, too.
